FR - Licorish Bistro (Bryanston)

 

I have been wanting to visit this spot for a long time now, and finally my husband and I decided to give it a try last night.

Firstly I am not so familiar with Bryanston, so it was a definite change in scenery for me, although I thought traffic in Rosebank/Sandton was bad around 6pm, that's until we got caught up in somewhat thousands of cars on the highway,  I really don't know how people deal with that on a daily basis.

Now on to the review . . . .

The restaurant was situated in "nice top notch looking" shopping mall. I could instantly see that this dinner was gonna cost us.

Look & Feel

We were pleasantly greeted but a few waiters, who then showed us our reserved table, I loved the fact that we were seated just on the entrance of the restaurant,  so airy and spacious. Décor was simple, which I loved. I admired the fact that I could see directly into the kitchen, Their head chef looked like he had all employees in check, floor manager included lol.

Now on to the menu,

They relatively didn't have a wide menu to choose from, but don't be fooled, it took me relatively and hour to decide what I would fancy. I have to admit their combinations are somewhat just weird, but I convinced myself they work.

 

For starters, we decided to go with gut and order the  chipotle squid heads, I ordered their signature cocktail, "Gucci Martini" and my husband opted for a apple .. . . .ginger kinda drink.

Within 5 to 10 minutes out starters arrived, I loved my cocktail, whiles my husbands had an overload of ginger, Our squid was beautifully presented but to a disappointment it was rubbery and tough,

On to mains :

I went for the harissa dusted salmon and my husband the beef fillet.

My salmon was delish, the best I have had in a long while, but that's where it cuts it for me sadly, their little coconut curried samosa, was not to pleasing to the pallet. The flavours simply didn't marry each other. Note to head chef : "I would ditch that". The salmon was accompanied with an oh so heavenly passion fruit sauce, 1 word  . . .  LOVE.

My husband dish however was the show stopper, I loved everything going on that plate.

When it came to desserts, we skipped as nothing really appealed to us on the menu.
